Title: Homogeneity phenomena and strengthening
Abstract: Definite plurals and conditionals show unexpected semantic variability contingent on whether they are embedded in an Upward Entailing or a Downward Entailing environment, giving rise to what is traditionally called Homogeneity.
I will discuss a hypothesis according to which Homogeneity phenomena are the result of missing alternatives: whenever a quantificational element has no stronger or weaker alternatives, it is strengthened in a way that might obscure its basic semantics.
