Prof. Tsvi Piran

Professor Tsvi Piran is the Schwarzmann Chair of Physics at the Racah Institute of Physics.  His research on relativistic astrophysics is at the link between astrophysics and fundamental theories – General Relativity and high-energy physics

Professor Piran’s research includes studies of Gamma-Ray Bursts, the brightest explosions in the Universe, Binary neutron star mergers that are sources of Gravitational waves and the foundries of the heaviest elements like Gold, Uranium, and Plutonium, Tidal Disruption Events in which stars are torn apart and devoured by Massive Black Holes and the origin of the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays.

To explore these phenomena, Professor Piran’s research group uses analytic methods, phenomenological modeling, and numerical simulations. Amongst alums of the group are faculty members at top Israeli universities and abroad.

Professor Piran was the head of the ISF Center of Excellence in Astrophysics from 2002 – 2010 and the I-Core Center for Astrophysics from 2013-2019.  His research has been generously funded by the ISF, the BSF, the Templeton Foundation, and three advanced ERC grants: GRBs: 2009-2015,  TreX 2016-2022, and MultiJets 2022-2027. Professor Piran is also a member of the Simons SCEECS collaboration 2023-2028.

Professor Piran has published more than 420 scientific papers with more than 37500 (ISI) citations and an H index of 96 (ISI).

In recognition of his scientific achievements, Professor Piran received the EMET Prize for Physics and Space Sciences in 2019 and the 16th Marcel Grossman Award in 2021
