20th Century English and American Novel

The course aims to familiarize students with a range of twentieth century British and American novels. We will engage with a wide spectrum of cultural and literary traditions from High Modernism to Postmodernism and examine the unique articulations of these developments within the genre. The novels studied over the course of the year are James Jayce´s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Virginia Woolf´s To the Lighthouse, William Faulkner´s Absalom, Absalom!, Vladimir Nabokov´s The Real Life of Sebastian Knight, John Fowles´ The French Lieutenant´s Woman, Toni Morrison´s Beloved and J.M. Coetzee´s Foe.
