The topic, ‘human dignity’, was chosen with care and constitutes a link between the history and the current politics of Germany and Israel and between Germany and Israel. Human dignity strikes the chords of crucial ethical and practical debates in various academic disciplines. It is touched upon in research on (international) terrorism, torture, (civil) war, big data and data protection, long-term care, PID, poverty alleviation and social security, minorities, history of human rights, assisted suicide, border regimes, and genetic engineering, to name just a few areas. The two summer schools of the 2016 IAHD will be the first institution-based endeavors to elaborate on aspects of human dignity involving several disciplines and an intense exchange between younger scholars and prominent senior scholars.
