The Jerusalem Brain Community invites you to our upcoming Brain & Beer event on Tuesday, June 12th, 2018 at Bolinat Cafe. The evening consists of short lectures by students on topics related to neuroscience. This gives students and faculty from all fields of brain research the opportunity to meet in a relaxed atmosphere over a beer, discuss their research and forge new collaborations.

Dr. Ayelet McKyton/ "Eye Opener: Sight following congenital blindness"

Roughly a quarter of childhood blindness cases in sub-Saharan Africa result from cataract, a treatable condition. The cataract-afflicted children typically remain blind due to lack of diagnosis and medical care. Project Eye-Opener, founded in 2013, has been set up to improve these children`s fate in a dramatic way. It combines surgical treatment with rigorous scientific evaluation and follow-up therapy to optimize chances for sight recovery. In the lecture, I will introduce the project and some findings that reveal how do the newly-sighted children understand the visual world after years of blindness.

Dr. Ayelet McKyton is a researcher and the coordinator of the Eye-Opener project in the laboratory of Prof. Ehud Zohary. In recent years, Dr. McKyton has published articles on the visual deficits of the newly-sighted in understanding and acting on visual stimuli.

Toviah Moldwin/ "AI and Consciousness: Why the Hard Problem is Still Hard?"

Toviah ia a a fourth-year ELSC student in the lab of Idan Segev. His work focuses on bridging the gap between artificial intelligence and biology at the level of single-neuron biophysics.

קהילת המוח הירושלמית מזמינה אתכם לערב בירה ומוח, שיתקיים ביום שלישי, ה-12ביוני 2018 בקפה בולינט. הערב יכלול סדרת הרצאות קצרות, על נושאים הקשורים למדעי המוח. זוהי הזדמנות לסטודנטים וחברי סגל להיפגש מחוץ לכותלי האוניברסיטה באווירה קלילה וכיפות וליהנות מהרצאות מרתקות על כוס בירה.

ד"ר איילת מקיטון/"בעיניים פקוחות: ראייה לאחר עיוורון מלידה"

כמעט רבע ממקרי העיוורון במהלך הילדות באפריקה שמדרום לסהרה נובעים מקטרקט, מצב הניתן לטיפול. הילדים החולים בקטרקט נשארים בדרך כלל עיוורים עקב חוסר איבחון וטיפול רפואי. פרויקט "בעיניים פקוחות", שהוקם בשנת 2013, הוקם כדי לשפר את גורל הילדים באופן דרמטי. הוא משלב טיפול כירורגי עם הערכה מדעית קפדנית ומעקב כדי להגדיל את סיכויי התאוששות הראייה. בהרצאה אציג את הפרוייקט וכמה ממצאים שיסבירו כיצד הילדים שרואים מחדש מבינים את העולם החזותי לאחר עיוורון של שנים ארוכות.

ד"ר איילת מקיטון היא חוקרת ומרכזת פרוייקט "בעיניים פקוחות" במעבדה של פרופ' אהוד זהרי. בשנים האחרונות פרסמה ד"ר מקיטון מאמרים לגבי החסכים של הרואים מחדש בתחומי הבנת העולם הראייתי והתנהגות על סמך גירויים ראייתיים.

טוביה מולדווין/"בינה מלאכותית ותודעה: למה הבעיה הקשה עדיין קשה?"

טוביה הוא סטודנט שנה רביעית במרכז למדעי המוח באוניברסיטה העברית בירושלים במעבדה של עידן שגב. במחקרו מנסה טוביה לקשר בין בינה מלאכותית לביולוגיה ברמה התאית - הנירון הבודד ותכונותיו הביופיזיקליות.
